Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Spiral Hose Guard?

Spiral Hose Guard protects hydraulic and pneumatic hoses from abrasion, shocks and general rubbing. Makes hoses more visible, helping to prevent possible accidents. It is easy to install either before or after assembly of the hose.

How do you Install Spiral Guard Wrap?

Installing Spiral Guard Wrap is very simple and straightforward- just ensure that the spiral is the correct size for your individual application.

Determine the outside diameter (OD) of your hose or bundle
Compare your OD to the Spiral Guard Wrap’s ‘ID Range’ and choose a part number that best matches the size of the line needing coverage
If your line OD is close to the top end of a spiral’s ID Range, consider using the next-larger spiral size for easier installation.

Contact your Sales Representative or Customer Service via phone or email for additional sizing and usage information and to place an order for Spiral Guard Wrap.

Spiral Guard Wrap is easily installed: When ample clearance is available, Spiral Guard Wrap simply slides over the component end and along the length to provide coverage. If fittings are present, or if the Spiral needs to expand for coverage, Spiral Guard Wrap is easily wrapped along the length of your assembly.

Spiral Guard Wrap is manufactured with a rigid and durable polymer, so there is no need to terminate or finish ends- just cut to length, wrap component, and get back to work.

Spiral Guard Wrap expands to accommodate larger diameter systems and hose bundles, but keep in mind that expanding the diameter will shorten the usable length of the spiral. If this could be problematic, please order additional footage, or order the next larger size to reduce the amount of expansion required for proper coverage.

What is “Firesleeve”?

Firesleeve is an industry generic term, typically referring to a glass fiber sleeve coated with red silicone rubber. Firesleeve is commonly used to protect hose and cables assemblies from flame and molten metal splash.

How Do You Install a Fire Sleeve?

Step 1:
Determine line outside diameter (OD) & acquire Pyrotex Firesleeve with matching inside diameter (ID).
For example, a 1″ OD Hose requires 1″ ID Pyrotex Firesleeve (PT16200-10).

Step 2:
Cut sleeve to required length and slide Pyrotex Firesleeve over line end.

Step 3:
To assist in sleeve installation, utilize lightly compressed air

Step 4:
Slide sleeve completely over line. Skin sleeve back from uncoupled end to allow for fitting installation, if required.
Once fitting is installed, finalize sleeving and center Pyrotex Firesleeve on line.

Step 5:
Firmly attach band clamp near both sleeve ends.
Follow proper installation instructions for your exact band clamp system.

Step 6:
Terminate sleeve ends with Tape to prevent fluid wicking, thermal transfer, and glass fiber escape.
On dry, clean Firesleeve, apply 1 wrap around sleeve, then proceed to wrap towards fitting ensuring 50% overlap of Tape.
When sleeve end is fully wrapped and terminated, press firmly on tape to ensure proper amalgamation and sealing.

How Do You Protect Hydraulic Hose?
Hydraulic hose assemblies rarely operate in controlled, protected environments. Rather, rough and demanding conditions are the norm. Hose is often exposed to flying debris in mobile equipment and the likes of weld spatter and hot metal chips—or even the errant lift truck—in industrial settings. It’s essential to protect hydraulic hose against abrasion, physical impact, crushing loads and high temperatures to ensure long, reliable operation. Here are some common ways to safeguard hose. Spiral Guards. Flat, spiral-shaped plastic guards wrap around a hose and, depending on the application, can be secured without removing an assembly from a machine. They’re made of materials such as heavy-duty polyethylene and have a flat profile with rounded edges to prevent damage to the hose. Plastic spiral guard offers a light and economical way to protect hoses from abrasion, cuts, impact and crushing loads, as well as UV attack. Like sleeves and wraps, the plastic guard is relatively easy to install and it can bundle together several hose lines. Fire Sleeve. A number of companies offer heat and flame-resistant hose protection products. Several manufacturers term it “fire sleeve.” This is a tough, flexible insulating cover that slides over a hose and clamps to the fittings. It is typically made of woven fiberglass or materials like high-temperature silicone. Nylon Hose Sleeve. Protective sleeves are textile tubes that slide over a hose. They’re made of materials like woven nylon or polyester and provide excellent resistance to external abrasion and UV radiation. The construction often offers a smooth interior wall that lets hose move freely inside the sleeve and prevent internal abrasion. Others, made of materials like polyamide, are reinforced and protect workers and machinery against hydraulic hose bursts and pinhole leaks. Sleeves are also an effective way to bundle together similarly rated high- or low-pressure hoses that bend and flex in the same direction. Hose sleeves can also improve aesthetics, as they provide a more-streamlined look to hydraulic hose on machinery. Spring Guards. Spring guards, as the name implies, are wound steel springs typically zinc-plated for corrosion resistance. They come in various diameters slightly larger than the hose OD. They install by simply sliding over the hose and are available in standard lengths or in bulk coils that can be cut to fit. Steel-spring hose guards support hydraulic hoses and help prevent damage. They’re commonly used on construction equipment but are suitable for any application that needs protection against abrasion, cuts, deep gouges, impact, and accidental compression.
